Q#1 : How do I get the moldy, mildewy smell out of my washing machine? It makes the clothes smell awful.
Q#2 : I always thought the musty smell was just from the basement - but it is coming from the washing machine ! I always leave the washing machine door open when not in use but it still smells.
A#1 : Run the longest and hottest cycle your machine allows. (sanitary) After the machine fills with the water, push pause and add more hot water (almost to the lower lip of visible drum) and 2 cups of vinegar. Then continue to run the cycle. This cleans the inside drum where softener accumulates and molds.
A#2 : Added 1/4 cup of baking soda directly into the washer before adding the clothes.
A#3 : Overdosing detergent (liquid or powder) and fabric softener can leave residues in the outer drum of the washer and promote the growth of mold. Also, doing some hot temperature washes at least ocasionally and lots of bleach added and it should help preventing any mold/mildew problems.
A#4 : Leave the door open. It helps big time. Run an empty, small load with bleach and use the larger amount.
A#5 : Try wiping the inside the drum with some white vinegar. Just put 1/2 cup to a cup of white vinegar in the rinse cycle (no hint of vinegar odor can be detected)
A#6 : Run powdered dish detergent (any brand) through your machine once a month (with no clothing in it) and it would do away with the smell.
